If you have a desk job, like I do, then you may want to listen up. Because even little standing and walking breaks during the day can make a big difference on your waistline, according to a new study.  Instead of being totally mobile for those eight hours, you should really try to get up and just take little mini-breaks from sitting on your duff.

If you watch any amount of television, you’ve probably seen the tempting commercials for a balance bracelet that uses magnetic forces to help you keep your balance and to help you perform better athletically.

In fact, many tennis pros use these bracelets, and I’ve seen them on the likes of Jillian Michaels in her workout videos and many other professional athletes, actors, actresses and others in the spotlight. So, there’s got to be something to them, right?

Today is indeed a very sad day for all of the fitness nation. The pioneer of fitness here in the US, Jack Lalanne, known for his sunny personality and healthy living ways, as well as stunning physical feats at later stages in his life, has passed away. He was 96 years old, and died of complications from pneumonia.

He will be sadly missed. Mr. Lalanne appeared frequently on talk shows and pushed for healthier living and moving around a lot more. He always said that as soon as you stop moving, that’s when you start dying – or something very wise and very true to that effect.

So, I’ve been seeing more and more short, intense workouts being marketed. And this makes me very, very happy as a busy woman with a career and many other outside interests. I never had any interested in spending over an hour at the gym, unless I was also soaking in the sauna at the end of my workout.

Not to mention, there were many times when I’d spend an hour or more at the gym and not feel like I really worked out that hard. I wouldn’t be really sore the next day, and I wouldn’t feel that ridiculous burn that I feel with so many of these shorter, more intense workouts that are out today.

If you’ve ever heard that all you need to do to get flat, muscular abs is to do intense, grueling ab workouts, then you’ve been misinformed.

Because flat abs do not have as much fat layered over them, and therefore appear smooth and muscular, you must take the fat layers off in order to get there.

To do that, you really need to focus not only on your workouts and on this area of your body of course, but you also need to figure out a lowfat, high protein diet that suits you.

A few months ago, my best friend and I went on a shopping trip and got to hang out for a while after we went to dinner.

I got to play a really fun Wii game with her little girl called “Just Dance”, and we had a blast. I thought it was so much fun!

My friend told me that she plays it so much with her daughter that she thinks she actually stays thin because of it during times when she eats more.

It’s that time of year. The new year.  A year of new promises we make to ourselves, and many times that promise involves a promise to our bodies.

A promise to be better to our bodies. to work out more, to start working out if you never have, or to eat right.

And many times unfortunately, the people who are not really serious or really committed to their body’s health and well being and longevity, fall off this “wagon” of new promises within the first month or two of trying to make the effort to be more fit.

I have been reading some interesting stuff about how walking benefits not only the human body, but also the human mind.

First of all, I’m reading a natural health book which highly advocates walking as a big part of daily exercise, especially brisk walking.

Brisk walking actually aids the mind in working better and problem solving better because the motion of walking, and the rhythmic swinging of the arms that goes with it, actually improves brain wave activity that relates to the synapses working more efficiently.

Synapses are really nothing more than electrical impulses that occur in the brain. They dictate how quickly and efficiently we think.

I don’t think that anyone will argue that your workouts should consist primarily of exercises designed to work out your cardiovascular system.

You should always incorporate aerobic activity into your fitness routine no matter what.

However, what most people don’t know is that flexibility and stretching is also incredibly important, especially as they age.

Guess what gives you the best flexibility and stretching exercise?  Yoga!

Not only does yoga give your body excellent lesson in flexibility, but it can also be used as a cardio workout. Some of my favorite workouts are on yoga workout dvd’s that I’ve owned for a while. They help keep my routine fresh by working in unique poses and different exercises.

Apparently the holidays really do pack a one two punch to our waistlines – especially, perhaps, for the female sex.

It seems that women are actually not only taking in more food around the holidays, which for most people ends up being a few weeks of increased food intake, but they also are much less active.

Research has found that most women are actually up to 30% less active around the holidays.

Perhaps it is because there are so many social events and family gatherings that it’s just too hard to fit in recreational fitness activities, or that most of us feel that we are eating so badly, why bother?
